"Sorry, I'm just really heavy today" — I must have said some version of that sentence a thousand times. To colleagues when I needed a longer bathroom break. To friends when I cancelled plans. To myself, mostly, on the days I felt like my own body was an inconvenience I owed everyone an explanation for.
I don't say it anymore. Not because the flow got lighter. Because I stopped believing I needed to apologise for something I have zero control over.
Where the apologising actually comes from
It's rarely one big moment. It's a thousand small ones — a leak that felt like a personal failure instead of a product limitation, a comment from someone who's never experienced it ("is it really that bad?"), a lifetime of pad adverts showing suspiciously blue liquid instead of anything resembling reality. All of it quietly teaches you that heavy periods are something to manage discreetly, apologetically, as if the goal is to make sure nobody ever has to know.
Somewhere in there, a lot of us absorb the idea that struggling with a heavy period is a "you" problem — that other women just cope fine, and you're the exception. Usually, that's just not true. You're not managing your body wrong. You're often just under-equipped for what your body is actually doing.

The shift that actually changed things for me
It wasn't a mindset trick. It was two practical things:
Getting properly assessed instead of assuming "heavy" was just my normal. A lot of us never check whether our flow sits in a range worth mentioning to a GP — we just compare notes with friends and shrug. Turns out my flow was genuinely on the heavier end, which wasn't a personal failing, it was just useful information.
Using products actually built for that reality, instead of doubling up regular pads and hoping. Once I was using something designed specifically for heavier flow, the leaks that used to trigger the apology reflex mostly stopped happening. And once the leaks stopped, so did the instinct to apologise — because there was nothing left to apologise for.
What I'd say to anyone still saying sorry
You don't owe anyone an explanation for a heavier period, any more than someone owes an explanation for being tall or needing glasses. Your body isn't the problem. If you're leaking through products regularly, that's a sign the product isn't matched to you — not a sign you're doing womanhood wrong.
Try switching what you're using before you accept that the apologising is just part of the deal. For a lot of us, it isn't.
Our Heavy Flow Period Pads are built for real, heavier flow — not the version pad adverts pretend exists. No apology required.
